Golf simulator room dimensions: length, width and ceiling
Updated October 20, 2026
Short answer: the ceiling is usually the limit, and it depends on how tall you are. A driver swing peaks about 3′3″ above the golfer's height, plus a 9″ safety buffer — so a 5′9″ golfer needs about 9′9″, and a 6′0″ golfer about 10′. Length depends on the launch monitor: from about 10 ft for units that sit beside the ball to 12–15 ft for radar units behind you. Width sets your screen size: roughly the room width minus 1–2 ft.
| Tallest golfer | Driver apex | Minimum safe ceiling | Comfortable ceiling |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5′ | 8′3″ | 9′ | 9′6″ |
| 5′3″ | 8′6″ | 9′3″ | 9′9″ |
| 5′6″ | 8′9″ | 9′6″ | 10′ |
| 5′8″ | 8′11″ | 9′8″ | 10′2″ |
| 5′9″ | 9′ | 9′9″ | 10′3″ |
| 5′10″ | 9′1″ | 9′10″ | 10′4″ |
| 6′ | 9′3″ | 10′ | 10′6″ |
| 6′2″ | 9′5″ | 10′2″ | 10′8″ |
| 6′4″ | 9′7″ | 10′4″ | 10′10″ |
| 6′6″ | 9′9″ | 10′6″ | 11′ |
Driver apex ≈ height + 3′3″; minimum adds a 9″ buffer; comfortable adds another 6″. Upright swingers should test a slow swing first.
| Launch monitor type | Minimum room length | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Beside the ball (camera units) | 10′ | SkyTrak ST MAX, Square Golf Launch Monitor, Bushnell Launch Pro, Foresight GC3 |
| Behind the golfer (radar units) | 12′–15′ | Rapsodo MLM2 Pro, Rapsodo MLM2XPRO, FlightScope Mevo Gen2, Garmin Approach R10 |
| Ceiling-mounted overhead | 12′ | Uneekor EYE XO, Uneekor EYE XO2, Uneekor QED, TrackMan iO |
From the room-length minimums in our equipment catalog. Radar units read the ball over a longer flight, so they need more depth behind the golfer.
Width
Width decides how big the screen can be. With a freestanding enclosure, plan on a screen about 2 ft narrower than the room; in a built-in room with padded walls, about 1 ft narrower. See screen size by room width for the full table.
Leave enough side room for the golfer to stand comfortably — and if both right- and left-handed players will use the room, center the hitting area or consider an overhead launch monitor so nothing needs moving.
Measure the lowest point, not the average
Beams, ductwork, light fixtures and garage-door tracks all count. A room listed as 9 ft often has an 8 ft obstruction in the swing path. The free fit calculator checks your exact room and height.
Common questions
- What ceiling height do I need for a golf simulator?
- About your height plus 4 ft: a driver peaks roughly 3 ft 3 in above the golfer’s height, plus a 9 in safety buffer. A 5′9″ golfer needs about 9′9″; a 6′0″ golfer about 10′. Measure the lowest point, including beams and ducts.
- Can I use a golf simulator with a 9 ft ceiling?
- A full driver swing clears 9 ft with the full 9-inch buffer only for golfers about 5′0″ or shorter. Taller golfers often still use 9 ft rooms by swinging driver at three-quarter length or hitting 3-wood; irons peak about a foot lower than a driver, so most iron play works. Test a slow swing first.
- How long does a golf simulator room need to be?
- About 10 ft minimum with a launch monitor that sits beside the ball, and 12–15 ft for radar units that sit behind the golfer. Longer rooms also give the projector more mounting options.
- How wide should a golf simulator room be?
- Rooms from about 10 ft wide work; 12 ft or more lets you use a standard-shaped screen. Width mainly sets screen size: about 2 ft narrower than the room with a freestanding enclosure, or 1 ft narrower in a built-in room.
